The Committee for Dropout Prevention

Vision Statement

The primary goal of the Committee for Dropout Prevention is to spotlight the problem of dropout prevention as a community concern and bring public awareness to the challenge we face in ensuring that “at risk” students stay in school and graduate. The first objective is to foster consensus among stakeholders and the public about the urgency of the problem and the need for a collaborative effort to alleviate it. The second objective is to move the Buffalo Public School System, community leaders, the business sector, faith-based institutions, healthcare providers, policy makers and nonprofit organizations providing youth services, alternate paths, and affordable housing to commit to a city-wide dropout prevention call to action. The action steps will include:

  • Form a task force to assess, document and address the dropout crisis in  Buffalo Public High Schools

  • Mobilize leaders by intensifying the public will, in order to effectively support beleaguered students and dropouts

  • Gather up-to-date quantitative and qualitative data on struggling students

  • Asset mapping of the environment of the existing educational support system

  • Report the findings in a detailed and comprehensive report

  • Develop a community action plan for improving the state of affairs with systemic reform to improved student retention, graduation, and alternative education success

Mission Statement

The Committee for Dropout Prevention serves to raise public awareness of the day-to-day challenges faced by students “at risk” to obtain a high school diploma. In so doing, the committee will help the community to understand the urgency needed to reduce Buffalo's drop-out rate, thereby increasing Buffalo’s graduation rate to 80% in a five year period.
